Observing what each
beneficiary had done to make his "domain" look nice by way
of planting shrubs, flowers and vegetables surrounding
each house and using stones that had been extracted from
the land fills used during construction, it is evident
that each human being, when given a chance will show his
innate need to be surrounded by things beautiful and
pleasant. And each in his own way, his own imagination.
The obvious lack of sophistication in the way the plants
and flowers have been arranged is easy to ignore because
their pride in showing them off to me is over-flowing. It
makes me feel that anything is possible for them from now
on.
Livelihood, creativity, music and many other things can be
achieved but the most basic thing for anyone to have is a
home to call his own. It is for this reason that our focus
is on the poorest of the poor, the homeless. We believe
that "hope always springs eternal" when one has a roof
above his head and that of his family. Those who formerly
lived by the banks of a treacherous river, those who found
temporary shelter (and overstayed) in the hallways that
belonged to the church, those who used to live in thatches
that were extensions to another makeshift huts...for many
of them, when it rained it also rained where they slept.
Now, not anymore for those who have found Asenso Village.
We envision that 4 to 5 hundred families will eventually
be housed in this plot of land. It can become a self-help
community with better hopes for the future. It is indeed a
very daunting task to ever imagine and achieve but we have
begun! And we will continue! We are in search of other
compassionate individuals and institutions who believe in
pure human kindness regardless of politics or religion and
who are willing to give support to this project. Your
empathy, compassion and goodwill have the power to change
people's lives. You can give a family a home that they
have been dreaming of and will cherish for many years to
come! Cash or skills, we welcome anything under the sun!
Infrastructure, water and electrical facilities are also
being addressed.
A concrete marker will eventually be erected near the
entrance of the village to contain the names of all the
benefactors. Your reward and ours is having done something
good that we ourselves will always remember in our hearts,
knowing that somewhere in this world we have made a family
or families happy and safe. |
